Rottweiler Puppy - Day 80

Leo is 80 days today and is as fit and fine as ever! Summer has begin in India and it has started showing for Leo. He is panting most of the time during afternoons and isn't interested in taking his evening meal. We were giving him 4 meals a day but now he is taking only 3 a day. Apart from that, he is active enough and plays as usual, though he sleeps a bit more these days.

Below is one of the videos of Leo shot a couple of days back.

Leo has learnt another command recently, "Roll". Its fun to watch him doing it even when not asked, so that he could earn a treat. Smart dog, yeah?!!

Here is another video of Leo where he was playing with my 7 year old kid or rather my kiddo is trying to play with him! ;)

11 Week Old Rottweiler Puppy

Leo is 11 weeks old today. He weighs 9.5 kilograms, he lost 500 grams in the last two days. We are disappointed about it but sure that he will soon recover it.

Leo had had his rabies vaccine on 22nd March and had been very aggressive and aloof since then. He is not eating his food properly and barking at us at times which he never did earlier. He also had a mild fever yesterday which is now gone. He had been biting a lot too since last two days. We spoke to the vet and learnt that there is nothing to worry about. He will be normal in a day or two.

Here are some pics of Leo clicked today at exact 11 weeks.

Puppy Vaccination - Day 74

Leo is 74 days old and got his first Rabies shot today. He weighs 10 kgs now which is okay.

As mentioned in my earlier posts, Leo had stopped liking Royal Canin Rottweiler Junior and hence I had ordered Royal Canin Maxi Junior for him. Unfortunately, he is not liking it too. We are having a hard time feeding him. We mix it with boiled eggs to feed him and sometimes he rejects that too. I am now looking for other dog food options. May be he will like others. The vet suspects that Leo's stomach might be upset and he is not feeling hungry so he prescribed some medicine yesterday. We have started the medicine today and will see how it flares.

Leo has reduced biting and nipping to a great extent. That's a big relief!! He is learning what to bite and what not to. Am sure he is going to be an obedient and disciplined dog in the times to come. Here is a video of Leo shot few days back.

Fun With Rottweilers - Day 72

Leo is 72 days old today. He has developed several habits which we are in awe of. He is a super cute little puppy.

He welcomes us so lovingly each time we enter the house from outside. My husband takes him out every morning and if someday, for some reason, he can't; Leo will carry his collar in his mouth and keep following my husband wherever he goes. He understands that this is the time for his walk and he is still not gone.

Rest of the day, he is all behind me all the time. He has to sit on the kitchen rug, while I cook; on the couch, while I work on my laptop; has to walk behind me when am moving around in the house. And it just doesn't stop here. He will sit at the washroom door, for as long as I am inside :) .

He is also an entertainer for my 7 year old kiddo. Watch this video where Leo fetches his toy for my son.

How To Make A Bitter Spray For Dogs To Stop Chewing

Leo has been chewing up a lot since the day he arrived. Initially he chewed our hands and fingers and gradually started chewing wall corners, furniture, slippers, shoes etc. We provided him chewing bones and toys but it didn't help much. With our regular, firm "No" to his chewing, he stopped chewing and biting us but still continued biting the other things. It wasn't possible to be around him all the time to keep watching him and stopping him from chewing up. He also used to lick walls which I didn't appreciate at all.

I searched for bitter sprays online but when I read the reviews, I was disappointed. Reviewers had mentioned that their dogs actually liked the taste of the bitter spray they had bought and wanted more of it :) . Hence, I dropped the idea of buying one myself. But the biting, licking and chewing was frustrating and so I came up with the idea of preparing the bitter spray at home. I made the spray from Neem also known as Azadirachtan Indica leaves. Its not only easily available but also very easy to prepare and store.

Neem [Azadirachtan Indica] tree is known for its chemical properties and has several medicinal benefits. Its leaves taste bitter and have anti-bacterial properties.

Neem Leaves

Neem Tree

Read on to see how we can prepare the "Neem Bitter Spray" for dogs at home :

Things you will need :
  • An Empty Spray Bottle
  • Neem leaves - 100-200 gms
  • Water: 1 Litre
Preparation Time : 15-20 minutes

Steps to be followed :
  • Wash the Neem leaves thoroughly
  • Pour the water in a sauce pan and start boiling it
  • Put the Neem leaves to the pan and keep on boiling for 15 minutes till the water reduces to half.

  •  Remove it from the stove and let it cool. The water would now be brown in color.
  •  Strain the water and discard the leaves.
  •  Pour this Neem water in the spray bottle and you are good to go.
  • Here is my spray. I have reused an empty spray bottle already available at my home.

My Neem Bitter Spray

How To Use It :

Spray it over all the places where your pet chews and licks. You will need to re-apply it frequently until your pet understands that that's not something he is supposed to chew/lick on.

I prefer to spray it as soon as I see Leo [my puppy] chewing on something. It not only tastes the bitterest when sprayed fresh but I also get a chance to say "No" to him. This has worked for me like anything and Leo has started understanding that he just can't keep chewing everything around.

Benefits of Neem Bitter Spray
  • Its totally safe for your pet, has no harmful chemicals and can be used without any health concerns
  • When licked by your pet, this spray helps in killing the worms in their stomachs, if any
  • It kills the germs wherever its sprayed, so its good for the hygiene of your house too
  • Its going to stop them from biting and chewing for sure
  • It saves your money too :)

I hope this is going to help all the proud pet owners. If you have any questions, do post them in the comments. Good Luck!

10 Week Old Rottweiler Puppy

Leo turned 10 weeks old today. He has grown up quite well in the last 2 weeks. I had posted a picture earlier comparing him when he was 6 weeks old and when he turned 8 weeks [see http://myrottweilerpuppy.blogspot.in/2015/03/8-week-old-rottweiler-puppy-day-56.html]. We saw a drastic change in him during those 2 weeks. I am now posting this picture to compare how he looked when he was 8 weeks old and how he looks today at 10 weeks.

Leo now weighs 7.5 kgs. He is 19 inches tall and 20 inches in length. Below are some pics of Leo clicked today.

Leo's pot belly is completely gone, Wohoo!!!

Looks like a big boy now!!

That's my leg, damn it!!

Puppy Vaccination And Eating Habits - Day 68

Leo is 68 days old today and he got his third round of vaccinations yesterday. He is doing very well since the last time he had an upset stomach. He is very active and playful through out the day and takes a few naps in between. Last week his weight was around 5 kgs and yesterday it came out to be 7.25 kgs, which is still on the lower side but he is catching up. Leo's vet is happy the way Leo is growing.

Leo enjoys sitting on the couch while I work on my laptop and likes to sit on the rug in the kitchen when I am cooking. He has learnt several commands and I will be shooting a video very soon to show how obediently he follows them. Leo is now able to follow "Come", "Sit", "No", "Off", "Down", "Eat" and "Stay".

We are taking him out for walks twice a day for 20-30 minutes each time and he really enjoys them.

Leo has become really choosy these days in terms of his food. He is not liking Royal Canin Rottweiler Junior anymore and we need to mix it with a tablespoon of milk or curd. We also mix it with a boiled egg/cottage cheese alternatively, and he is too happy to have it then. I have got Royal Canin Maxi Junior food for Leo this time to see if he likes to eat that. I am yet to start it and will post the details about them as soon as I introduce it to Leo.

Funny Sleeping Postures of A Rottweiler Puppy

Its amusing to watch Leo sleeping peacefully like a log. Though he seems to be sleeping like a log, he is the first one to reach the door as soon as the door bell rings. The Rottweiler instincts are growing in him :) . I captured some of his pictures over the last 25 days and here they are :

Hiccups in Rottweiler Puppy

Leo has turned 67 days old today. Since the day he arrived, I had been observing him getting hiccups almost every time after his meals. Hiccups in puppies is a normal activity and there is nothing to be worried about it. They will eventually grow out of it.

I shot a video of Leo today where he is having his regular hiccups. Watch it out :

Dog's Feeding Bowl Stand

Since Rottweilers are large breed dogs and grow up to 22 inches tall, eating from the ground level is very unhealthy for them. It causes stress on the neck and back muscles and leads to incorrect posture.  An elevated feeder aids in digestion and reduces ingested air.

Leo has been growing up fast and we had been thinking of buying an adjustable feeding stand for him. So we ordered a feeding stand for him online and it got delivered today. Below are the pics :

Before Assembling

When we opened the package, Leo got scared of the new bowls (they are much bigger in size than his current ones) and started barking. Watch his reaction to the his new stuff

To see how the feeding stand can be assembled, watch this video :

Aggressive Rottweiler - Day 65

Leo gets really aggressive while playing in the evenings. He starts behaving like crazy and keeps running here and there. He will bite on everything he can get and keep growling. This behavior is known as "Zoomies". They behave like maniacs due to sudden burst of energy, generally once or twice a day.  These videos have been shot last evening during one of his zoomies :

And this is how my son can be seen when Leo is having his zoomies :-)

He doesn't even leave his footwear down as Leo has already cut one of his. :)

How To Feed Royal Canin To Your Dog

When I got my 6 week old Rottweiler puppy, "Royal Canin" was the first choice for him. We did not want to upset the delicate stomach and digestive system of the little pup by changing his food while he settled in his new home. So we learnt from the breeder that he was feeding "Cerelac"[Infant food] and cooked Crushed Wheat to our puppy but when we fed the same, our puppy suffered from diarrhea. When consulted the Vet, he suggested "Pet-O-Lac" but somehow our puppy didn't like it.

Finally, we got the "Royal Canin Puppy Food" for him which he loved. We used to soak it for around 20-30 minutes in warm water before feeding so that it became soft and chewable for our little puppy. It didn't upset his stomach and he used to enjoy his food.

Once our puppy turned 8 weeks old, we introduced "Royal Canin Rottweiler Junior" to him. Initially we soaked it but within a couple of days our puppy stopped liking it so we started giving it dry. He now eats it dry and loves it like that. Apart from this, we are also giving a tablespoon of curd with some cooked rice and lentils, once a day. So basically, our puppy has exclusively been on a Royal Canin diet till now.

Below are few feeding tips for a puppy :
  • Feed a puppy 4-5 times a day until he is 2 months old. You may continue doing so for one more month depending on the needs of your puppy. Our puppy had a pot belly so we had reduced the quantity of the meal and increased the number of times of meals
  • Reduce the number of meals to 3 a day once he is 2-3 months old and later twice a day when he is 6 months old
  • Do not introduce new foods suddenly. Start them little at a time and gradually increase the quantity
  • Always make sure to have water available all the times for your dog
  • The feeding guidelines mentioned on the dog food might not always be right for your dog so feed them initially as per the guideline but make changes as per your dog's need. If your dog doesn't finish all of his food, reduce the quantity. If he is hungry even after finishing his meal, you may like to increase the quantity. Also, keep checking on their weight and other development aspects
  • Do not give lot of treats or scrap foods. They add calories but do not provide the required nutrition. They shouldn't be more than 10% of the daily calories requirement of your dog.
  • Keep visiting your vet regularly to see if your dog is growing properly

Puppy Vaccination - Day 61

It was Holi in India two days back which is one of the major festivals here, and hence, I was too occupied to write a post for Leo.

Leo got his second shot of vaccination yesterday which was a 9 in 1. His next vaccination is due on 15th March. Leo did not get any fever after both of his vaccinations received till date. He is growing up too fast and people are noticing it. His is becoming even more active day by day. Here is a pic of Leo clicked today. He loves to rest his head on my feet or leg.

My looks are deceiving, I ain't that innocent!

The vet also measured Leo's weight yesterday and he is now 5.5 kgs. We has gained around a kilogram in the last 4-5 days.

My boy doesn't like to be on leash and this is what he does when he sees it!! Though he sits quietly when the leash has been put on. Below pics were clicked at Leo's Day 56.

We had started "Royal Canin Junior Rottweiler" for Leo 3-4 days back. Incidentally, Leo is not liking it when soaked, he likes to have it dry. We consulted the vet for the same and he said it was okay to feed them without soaking if Leo likes it that way.
